
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine, a laboratory technician and John Ormond, a stockbroker. She is the second of five children to her parents. She went to private school, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early performance in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady started to attract attention. After a year in art school , she was moved to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1988. Ormond made her first appearance on British television's 1989 serial Traffik. It revolved around illicit heroin trade between the far East as well as the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin addict daughter of the main character, she was a Home Office minister who was involved in the fight against heroin importation. This first appearance earned him rave reviews.
